DNACPR & ReSPECT Discussions
DNACPR (Do Not Attempt Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) and ReSPECT (Recommended Summary Plan for Emergency Care and Treatment) are frameworks used within healthcare to support personalised decision-making in emergency situations.
These topics can feel sensitive and complex. They are intended to ensure that care provided in emergencies is appropriate to the individual’s health condition, values, and preferences.
A DNACPR decision relates specifically to whether CPR would be attempted if a person’s heart or breathing stops. It is important to understand that this decision does not affect other aspects of medical care.
The ReSPECT process is broader and may include discussion of:
- Overall goals of care
- Preferred place of treatment or care
- Appropriate treatments in an emergency situation
- Levels of escalation if health deteriorates
- Individual values and priorities
